Saving Faith: Managing Religious Scrupulosity in the middle of exposure therapy

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Religious scrupulosity poses subtle challenges for sufferers who wish to cultivate faith while undergoing treatment, especially when the therapist or patient misunderstand good mental health as necessitating abandonment of traditional religious values or practices. Scrupulosity is viewed as the enemy of faith versus the faith community. Participants will learn how a healthy faith and religious practice is founded upon the ability to tolerate doubt and uncertainty while living with hope. Ways to formulate and apply exposure with response prevention while respecting and adhering to traditional faith practices will be described. Ways to develop a standard for healthy faith and religious practice that adheres to traditional religious values will be described as it applies to Christian, Jewish and Muslim traditions.
