Sexual obsessions and compulsions are highly stigmatized and thus create unique treatment challenges. The purpose of this panel is to create a non-judgmental environment to explore this stigmatized topic. The panelists will discuss evidence-based assessment and treatment strategies for patients with sexual OCD, while sharing case examples to normalize the experience of sexual symptoms and to provide therapists with treatment strategies for their own cases. The following topics as they relate to sexual OCD will be discussed: distinguishing sexual OCD from paraphilia; recognizing common compulsions and avoidance behaviors; implementing effective exposures in and out of the office; addressing shame and guilt; and ethical considerations when working with children and adolescents or patients with a history of sexual abuse.
