Adherence to and effectiveness of OCD treatment can be greatly compromised by the presence of comorbid clinical conditions. Comorbidity in OCD patients has been shown to be associated with higher levels of anxiety and depression, increased severity of obsessions and compulsions, and increased resistance or non-response to OCD treatment. Furthermore, comorbidity is the rule rather than the exception for adults who enter OCD treatment. Yet there is little to guide therapists in dealing with the comorbid conditions found in OCD patients in a rational and methodical approach. In this presentation, specific guidance will be offered for effectively addressing the more common and less common clinical conditions that are present in patients seeking OCD treatment.
